THE TEDDER SHELTER IN PLEASANT GROVE CEMETERY
By Russell Tedder

Since long before anyone living today can remember, a small shelter has stood over a child’s grave in the cemetery at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church near Eridu in Taylor County, Fla. Like a monument, the little structure by a cabbage palm near the center of the cemetery is the first to catch the visitor’s eye. The inscription on the tombstone of the little five year old girl is E. R. J., daughter of G. H. and F. J. Tedder, Feb. 4, 1875—Sept. 25, 1880. The initials E. R. J. stand for Elizabeth Rebecca Jane. Her parents, George Henry and Flora Jane Campbell Tedder, are buried beside her.
George Henry Tedder was an older brother of Bartow Webster Tedder, grandfather to children of Sam and Elma Tedder (Virginia, Curtis, Ernest, J. B., and Russell) and Andrew and Annie Bell Reams (Zona, Elsie and Brenda). His many nephews and nieces knew George as “Uncle Tobe.” In 1907, Bartow and his 14 year old son, Sam, built the little shelter over Elizabeth’s grave, 27 years after her death. Sam had an ox named “Buck” which pulled a cart on which they hauled the materials from their home at the old Tedder Place, about a half-mile down what is now known as Pleasant Grove Road, to the cemetery.
The shelter was constructed with heart pine posts at each of the four corners, approximately 2½ x 2½ inches square, which were sunk into the ground. The rafters and other framework were also made of heart pine while the shingles were hand-riven from cypress. The framework and shingles were fastened and held together with square iron nails.
