US Congressman. After serving in the Army during World War II, he was a mortician and a member of the Michigan State Senate, 1951 to 1954. In 1955, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-fourth Congress and reelected to the twelve succeeding Congresses, serving until his resignation in 1980. He was the founder and first chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, serving from 1969 to 1971. He also was chairman of the African affairs subcommittee of what was then the House Foreign Affairs Committee, serving from 1973 to 1978. He died of a stroke.
