Cenotaph. Bert is not buried here with his parents Daniel and Mary. He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Rutland, Vt., with his wife, daughter and in-laws.

Attorney, Businessman and Politician. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1901 and joined the Thomasites, a predecessor to the Peace Corps, whose members volunteered to teach in the Philippines after the Spanish-American War. He studied law with the Rutland firm of Lawrence and Lawrence, attained admission to the bar, and became a partner, with the firm called Lawrence, Lawrence and Stafford, and later reorganized as Lawrence, Stafford and O’Brien. Stafford was also President of the Rutland County National Bank, and a trustee of the Marble Savings Bank. He was Rutland County State’s Attorney, and served as Rutland’s Mayor from 1915 to 1917. He was President of the Vermont Bar Association in 1930. He served on the Vermont Board of Education for several years in the 1920s and 1930s, including terms as Chairman. (bio by Bill McKern)
