Clint Glasgow, 61, Has Broken Neck; He Fools Doctors by Convalescing

Beech, Ia., Man Optimistic but Wishes Nurses Would Let Him Alone.

The doctors were anything but optimistic when they first examined Clint Glasgow. Broken Neck. Rarely, mused the medical men at the bedside of the 61-year-old Beech, Ia., hardware merchant, do persons so injured recover. Today the surgeons who were dubious said Clint Glasgow has an even chance to return to his hardware store and josh the townfolk in his dour way.

Even Clint is optimistic--if the nurses at the Des Moines General hospital would let him alone for a moment. The hardy Beech storekeeper's neck was broken during a friendly scuffle with a customer July 24. The customer, Howard Doan, 30 years old, had engaged in banter with the hardware mechant. The scuffle followed. Round and round the two men milled. Glasgow say an opportunity to down the younger man and he jumped upon Doan's back.

Doan is said to have resorted to the "flying mare" method of throwing Glasgow off his back. The hardware merchant was pitched over Doan's head. He landed on the top of his head. The force of his fall crushed two vertebrae. An Indianola physician was summoned. Glasgow was almost fully paralyzed. He was rushed to the Des Moines Hospital.

The paralysis ( ? ) disappeared. The patient has sensations of feeling in his limbs. That is considered a good sign by his physicians. "If complications do not appear, Glasgow has a good chance for recovery," declared hospital attendants.

Of course Mr. Glasgow hopes to recover. But he wouln't say so in words, this morning. He was rather irritated by so much "fussing" around his bedside. "If these nurses would let me alone for half a day, I might make some progress," complained the patient. And the nurses smiled at that. Nurses don't have to feel pulses to ascertain a patient's condition.
