Born in Georgia and lived most of his life in Appling County, Georgia. Married to Mary Johnson about 1838 and together they had nine known children.

Enlisted at the age of 40 on March 4, 1862 in Appling GA. Served with Company F, 47th Reg, Georgia Infantry. However, he mustered out two months later on May 12, 1862 when he provided a substitute - his son Elias Altman.

He appears to have died about 1868, his wife was shown to be a widow in the 1870 census.

Many of his descendents are buried in the Altman Cemetery near Baxley in Appling Couny, Georgia.

Note: There were two Sampson Altman from Georgia who served during the Civil War. The other Sampson Altman was younger (1833), died while serving in 1862 and was buried in Augusta, Georgia. He had married to Ann Bryan in Florida in 1851 and had three known sons.
