Lucia Bencomo Chavez, 87, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother,
sister, aunt, cousin and godmother, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2007 at Sierra Health Care Center in Truth or Consequences.
She was born Feb. 12, 1920 in Arrey to Gregorio and Elvira (Grijalva) Bencomo. Lucia was a homemaker and the historian of the family, and provided a wealth of information regarding family history to all who inquired.
She is survived by daughters, Sophia McNutt and Eloisa Wilson
(Jim); sons, Henry Chavez (Irene), Richard Chavez (Gloria) and Bobby Chavez; brothers, Celso Bencomo (Celia) and Gregorio
Bencomo; sisters, Genoveva Trujillo, Emma Vega and Elvira Tafoya (Solomon); 13 grandchildren;
23 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Lucia was preceded in death by Daniel Mendoza Chavez, her husband of 58 years (deceased May 18, 1995); daughter, Gloria Chavez Pacheco (deceased Oct. 4, 2007); and grandson, Tommy Lee Casares (deceased May 20, 1986).
A rosary vigil was held Friday, Oct. 12, 2007 at Our Lady of Perpetual
Help Catholic Church led by Deacon Adam Sanchez. Friends and family joined together to celebrate
the funeral mass Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007 at Our Lady of Perpetual
Help Catholic Church with Rev. Tony Basso officiating. The rite of committal and interment followed at the Arrey Cemetery, where she was laid to rest.
Serving as casket bearers were all of her grandsons, J. Kim McNutt, Danny Casares, Dennis and Jay Pacheco, Patrick, Jerry, Michael and Eric Chavez. Following interment,
a celebration of life reception was held at the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Caballo/Arrey where Lucia
was a charter member.
Arrangements were by Kirikos Family Funeral Home Inc., 303 N. Cedar St., in TorC.
