He was born in St. Nazianz, WI on April 28, 1940, a son of the late Edmund and Marcella (Seipel) Backhaus.
He attended St. Gregory School and graduated from Kiel High School in 1958.
Eugene enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 29, 1958, serving as a weather observer in Greenland, and was honorably discharged on June 28, 1961.
On February 9, 1963, Dolores Hagenow and Eugene Backhaus were united in marriage in Kiel.
Eugene was employed at the Kohler Company over 37 years, retiring as foreman of Central Maintenance.
Surviving Eugene is his wife Dolores; three children and their spouses, Deborah (Harold) Kohls of Maricopa, AZ Brenda (Andrew) Shircel of Sheboygan Falls and Mark (Deborah) Backhaus of Waukesha, WI; nine grandchildren; a sister, Ruth (Karl) Stoeckight of Green Bay.
In addition to his parents, Eugene was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Backhaus.
Entombment at the Garden of Peace Mausoleum of Greenlawn Memorial Park.
