US Congressman. He was professor of history in Philadelphia high schools when he was admitted to the bar and commenced law practice in Ambler, Pennsylvania in 1929. In 1933 he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-third Congress and to the five succeeding Congresses, serving until his death in a private plane crash. The Navy destroyer USS J. William Ditter (DM-31) was named in his honor.
