MATILDA G. ABATE, 78, of HAZLET, passed away at her home on Saturday, Oct. 20. She taught us about love and the importance of family. She had been lovingly cared for and frequently visited by her family. Born in Newark, she moved to Hazlet with her husband, Joe Abate in 1955. Mrs. Abate was a Christian. She worked for Prudential in Newark as a clerk, and in the ARA food service department in Bell Labs, Holmdel.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph F. Abate in 2005; a brother, George Heinlein; and a sister, Marge Dunn. Surviving are two sons, Joseph Abate of Hazlet and Kevin Abate of Bedford, Va.; a daughter, Cynthia Abate of New York and New England; a sister-in-law, Freida Heinlein of New Jersey; a sister and brother-in-law, Eileen and Richard Ludmerer of New Jersey; a brother-in-law, Joe Dunn of Virginia; and three grandchildren, Joseph, Jessica and William Abate.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Waitt-Nelms Funeral Home, 501 Route 79, Morganville, Marlboro. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, friends and relatives may gather there at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow at Holmdel Cemetery, Holmdel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Matilda's name to the VNA Hospice of Central New Jersey, 176 Riverside Ave., Red Bank, NJ 07701, Attn: Development Department.
