Norma Jean Posey

Norma Jean Posey, 81, passed away January 3, 2010, at her home in Tulsa. Norma was born on October 24, 1928, to Estelle Horn and George W. Grayson. As a high school junior, Norma began her career as a part-time "number please" telephone operator in 1945. After graduation, she joined the company full time and retired as a Chief Operator from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1981. Norma was married for 34 years to William Posey and they traveled to many foreign countries, as well as extensively in the United States. She was a proud member of the Creek Nation and participated in tribal activities in her earlier years. Norma had a great sense of humor and was known for her generosity to those in need. She was seen as a blessing by many who were on the receiving end of her kindness. Perhaps her most rewarding experience was raising her late-in-life granddaughter, Onitta Lee, for 13 years. Norma volunteered at school, worked with Girl Scouts, and had a major influence in the life of Onitta. Norma was preceded in death by her mother, Estelle McAlister; her stepfather, Zed McAlister; and her husband, Bill. Norma is survived by her sisters, Mary Jane Bias and husband, Henry, of Tulsa, Liz Elder of New Orleans; son, Lee Posey of Tulsa; step-daughter, Charlotte Mullin of Afton; grandchildren, Shelly Early and Bill Mericle of Afton; Cheli Deede of Tulsa, and Onitta Lee Posey of Jenks; great-grandchildren, Dylan Williams of Tulsa, Cody, Dillon and Charee Mericle of Afton. Norma also leaves behind Faye Young and Judy Stricklen who helped make her last few years of life comfortable and fulfilling. Also missing her greatly will be Max, her loving dog. Service will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 6th, at Moore's Eastlawn. Family and friends will gather at 11:30 a.m., prior to the service at Norma's home to share food and memories. Moore's Eastlawn 622-1155 This obituary was published in the Tulsa World on 1/5/2010.
