H. Clay Mead, 96, of Marshall, died Thursday, March 4, 2021 at Big Bend Retreat in Slater.

Graveside services with military honors will be Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. at Slater City Cemetery, with William W. Harlow officiating. Pallbearers will be Sam Mead, Floyd Alsbach, Jack Alsbach, Brandon Duran, Nathan Callahan, and Isaac Christy. Honorary pallbearers will be Lee Bearden, David Diehm, William Watson, Bedford Knipschild, and Richard Raynor. Friends may call from 8:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Saturday at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Memorials are suggested to Big Bend Retreat or First United Methodist Church of Marshall in care of the funeral home.

Born January 13, 1925 in Kansas City, Missouri, he was the son of the late Dr. Samuel Taylor Mead and Sophronia Hibbard Mead. On December 19, 1955 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, he married Lela Edge, and she survives of the home.

Also surviving is a son, Sam Mead and his wife Beth of Columbia; a daughter Lynda Alsbach and her husband Floyd of Marshall; three grandchildren, Hannah Duran and her husband Brandon of Kansas City, Missouri, Cori Mead of Columbia, and Jack Alsbach of Lee's Summit; and a cousin, William H. Mead and his wife Dorothy of Thousand Oaks, California.

Mr. Mead was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marshall, where he served on the Administrative Council for a number of years. He was a 1942 graduate of Slater High School, and attended Central Methodist College in Fayette. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in Zoology. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he received three Bronze Star medals for his exemplary service, and two Purple Hearts. He owned and operated Clay Mead Furniture on the north edge of Marshall from 1957 until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the American Legion Post #78 in Slater. He served several terms on the Board of Education of Marshall Public Schools, where he had served as President and Board Treasurer. He was instrumental in raising funds to erect the brick sign in front of Marshall High School. He was a long-time member of the Marshall Chamber of Commerce, and had served on its Board of Directors for several years. He had served on the Marshall Planning & Zoning Board. He was a member and Past-President of the Marshall Rotary Club, and had been named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Trilumina Lodge #205 A.F. & A.M. in Marshall. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Indian Foothills Golf Club, and had hit two holes in one. A community-minded individual, he was known for his efforts in helping to raise funds for various organizations and charities.
