Carolyn Mae Brown Keehner, Erends was born Carrie Matilda. She wanted a more modern name and renamed herself Carolyn Mae. After her mother died of peritonitis, Mae took care of her younger siblings until she married her husband Llewellyn Keehner in 1928. Mae and Lew had three children; Elberta "Beth", Llewellyn "Bill", and Ken Keehner. After their divorce Mae married Rudolph Erends in 1954.

Mimi as Carolyn was affectionately known by family was always enthusiastic. She was a blessing to all who met her. She loved children! Always a Sunday School teacher, "Jesus Loves Us" was her theme song. When she didn't want children to know what she was saying she'd spell the words instead of speaking them. She was a mother who challenged her children to learn more, question everything and do the right thing. Lew wrote a diary about courting "Mae", the love of his life on several Indian Chief tablets.

Sadly, Mae had many allergies which ultimately took her life. When she and Lew were first married she was a personal maid for a family and Lew the chauffeur for the same family. Because they couldn't have children while working on this job their first born, Elberta was given to someone and isn't listed on the 1930 census. Mae was the block warden of her neighborhood in San Francisco during WWII siren warnings.
