James (Jim) Robert Squires Sr.
James Robert Squires Sr. lived in Manton, Michigan and passed away at the age of 66 at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac, Michigan on February 25, 1988 with his wife and a sister Marilyn at his side. He had a lengthy illness with his heart and passed away from Chronic Congestive Cardiomyopathy, Ischemia Heart Disease and severe Peripheral Vascular Disease. James was born May 13, 1921 to Albert Leroy Squires (1897 - 1971) and Alice Marie Truxton Squires (1902 - 1981) in Flint, Michigan and graduated from Flint Northern School on May 31, 1939. James married Gladys Lucinda Dewitt (1924-2006) on September 3, 1940 in Mecosta County, Barryton, Michigan.
James loved flea markets, yard sales, and was a week-end Auctioneer in Cadillac, Michigan. James retired from Evart Products in 1978 in Evart, Michigan on a medical disability and loved to travel. He lived in Colorado for a short time and had a cabin in Mackinac City, Michigan. He loved to tinker around with his televisions and radios and repair them and had lots of pets including a talking mynah bird (Heckle), 3 squirrel monkeys (CheeChee, Chico and Peppy) guinea pigs, white mice and a baby lamb named "Elvis" because it's little legs wobbled like Elvis. He served his country during WWII with the 53RD Airborne Infantry, U.S. Army. His unit saw action throughout Germany and Europe. He received many medals of honor including the Purple Heart. In his earlier years he was a Boy Scout and attended the Flint Institute Of Arts in Flint, Michigan and worked with the Youth Administration in commercial art. He was a Chauffer with the People's Cab Company and a Manager for Gilbert's in Flint. James and his wife, Gladys lived on her family (Dewitt) farm raising 5 children there before moving to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan where he owned and operated a small corner store and then moved to the Lake Station-Evart area to work in various factories.
James and Gladys had five daughters; Arlene (1944 - 2014), Lucinda, Joyce, Vicki and Tomalou; three sons; James Jr., Larry Sr. and Kevin; four brothers; William Arthur Squires (1923 - 1991), Albert Leroy Squires (1925 - 1990), Jack Louis Squires (1929 - 1984), Robert James, and Jerry Lee; two sisters; Margaret E. Squires Back (1936 - 2002) and Marilyn Elaine Squires Land (1935 - 2011)
Funeral Services were held at 2 P.M. Monday, February 29, 1988 at Hall Funeral Home in Manton, Michigan with the Rev. Wayne Squires and Pastor Dean Burns officiating. Burial was in the spring at East Fork Cemetery in Mecosta County, Barryton, Michigan; Plot: Lot 31 Section 3
