Althea’s love for family was her first priority. Active in all their activities she assisted in establishing a Red Cross clinic in the elementary school where she volunteered. She also served in many Mothers’ Clubs and as PTA officers throughout the years. In addition to service to her family, she began a lifetime of volunteering during World War II as a teenager in a observation tower documenting the times and directional paths of airplanes.
She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mansfield joining in 1952. She then became an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland serving as a deacon, elder and Stephen Minister. She currently belongs to First Congregational Church in Mansfield.
Giving service to her community by volunteering was important. She volunteered at the Art Center, Mansfield MedCentral Health System and Kingwood Center for many years. She loved flower gardening and belonged to Four Seasons Garden Club for 45 years. Althea had been employed by the Richland County Board of Education for twenty years.
She is survived by daughters, Gail Whitcomb, Rebecca (John) Brewster; son, David (Kelly) Bardeen; grandchildren, David (Rebecca) Whitcomb, Amanda (Fredy) Robles, Matthew (Abby) and Taylor Bardeen; great grandchildren, Kyle and Andrew Whitcomb; sister, Audrey Muth; and nephews, David Muth, Dorr and Hal Glover.
Althea was preceded in death by her son, Alan; husband Alton; brothers, Merlin and Leland; and brother-in-law, Theodore Muth.
She will be laid to rest in Franklin Cemetery in a private service.
