KERRVILLE ? Arthur Joseph Barke, 78, a resident of Kerrville for 18 years, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007. He was a prior resident of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Washington, D.C.

Art was born Feb. 21, 1929, in Norfolk, Va., to Samuel Daniel and Lena Knisley Barke. He married Ruth Ramm in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 21, 1956. She passed away March 25, 1985. In 1989, he and Beverly Ann Dunn married, and she survives.

As a young man, he attended Fork Union Military Academy in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Summers were spent in Ohio with his Knisley grandparents and with the Barke grandparents in Baltimore, Md. He later attended the University of Ohio, but was always a loyal Washington Redskins fan. It was not unusual for him to burst into the Redskins fight song while traveling on vacation.

?Once a Marine, Always a Marine,? he used to say, as he hoisted his Marine flag up the pole. He served in the United States Marine Corps for six years in China and in France. Following his military service, he was employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, where he retired.

Art spent much of his life in service to others as a Mason and Shriner, as well as a volunteer at Southern Maryland Hospital. He was known as ?Doctor Pockets? when he traveled as a clown with the Shriners to entertain the children in the Shriner hospitals.

He was a member of the Oxon Hill Church of Christ in Maryland and the Riverside Church of Christ in Kerrville.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly; his daughter, Laurie M. Lockhart and husband, Mark, of Ohio, and their three children, Rebecca, Sarah and Cathryn; stepsons, John R. Dunn and wife, Lizzie, of Kerrville, Charles S. Dunn and wife, Desire, of Lubbock and Lloyd A. Dunn and wife, Robbie.

Friends are invited to visit from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at Grimes Funeral Chapels, with interment at a later date in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, Md.

Memorials may be made to the Riverside Church of Christ Building Fund, 218 Quinlan Street, PMB No. 211, Kerrville, TX 78028.
