Eldon Edward Jensen was born on Octorber 26, 1927 at Shelby, Iowa. He was the son of Albert and Ruth (Campbell) Jensen. He was baptized at the Shelby Methodist Church and later confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Avoca, Iowa. Eldon attended school in Shelby, graduating with the Class of 1945. While in high school, he was a member of the boys basketball team that went to the state tournament.
Eldon was united in marriage to Patricia Donahue on October 2, 1948 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Avoca, Iowa. To this union five children were born; Susan, Rick, Mark, Jack and Michael. Eldon and Patricia began their own family lawn care service which has been passed down to his children and grandchildren. He also worked for the Omaha World Herald as circulation manager for southwest Iowa. Eldon later worked for the city of Shelby as street and water maintenance manager. He retired from this position 1992.
Eldon instilled a hard work ethic in his children and grandchildren and he was strict but fair. He enjoyed sports, especially bowling and fishing. He loved visiting with people at the Corn Stalk Restaurant and playing cards. He and Patricia were members of a Pinochle group for over thirty-five years. Eldon liked to play pool but like with all sports, didn't like to lose. Eldon seldom missed any sports event in which his grandchildren participated.
Eldon died on Sunday, April 16, 2006 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He had attained the age of seventy eight years, five months and two days. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Shelby, Iowa; one daughter, Susan and her husband, Dr. Craig Welbourne, of Western Springs, Illinois; four sons; Rick and his wife, Monica of Omaha, Nebraska, Mark and his wife, Kathy of Shelby, Jack and his wife, Paula of Independence, Missouri and Michael and his wife, Janice of Cary, North Carolina; ten grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Avoca, Iowa with Rev. John Frost as the celebrant and Msgr. Eugene Kerwin as the concelebrant. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Grace Jensen, Adam Jensen with Jenny Jensen, Brianna Jensen, Aaron Jensen, Dr. Benjamin Welbourne, Bridget Welbourne, Kevin Jensen, Julie Jensen and Matthew Jensen serving as casket bearers. Interment was held in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa.
