Dr. Robert C. Cowan Jr., 76 of River Road, Vienna, died May 19, 2002, at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born Dec. 24, 1925, at Morgantown, son of the late Robert C. Cowan Sr. and Virginia Frances Jameson Cowan.

Dr. Cowan practiced medicine in the Parkersburg area for many years. He was an active part of the history of Camden Clark Memorial Hospital where he was Director of the Medical Internship Program and served on multiple Medical Staff Committees including being Medical Liaison and Chief of Medical Staff in 1969. He was also medical director for the Emergency Department and the Ambulance service.

Dr. Cowan was the recipient of the Samuel W. Channel Excellence in EMS award. He developed the area's Paramedic Program and was a medical staff member for the State Paramedic Certification. He was instrumental in the development of the local EMS Medical Command and Reacom Center and was the Region 5 EMS Medical Director. In recognition for his work, Region 5 EMS office was dedicated and named in honor of Dr. Cowan and his contributions to EMS.

Dr. Cowan was preceptor for West Virginia University School of Medicine for medical students and coordinated Medical Extern Programs for medical students. He also was preceptor for electives for the Physicians Assistance Program.

Dr. Cowan was a member of the Parkersburg Country Club, Rotary Club, Mount Olivet Masonic Lodge 3, Scottish Rite Bodies 32nd Degree, Nemesis Temple Shrine, BPOE 198 and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

Surviving is his wife of 52 years, Sarah "Sally" Jackson Cowan; a son Robert C. Cowan III of Vienna; two daughters, Pamela A. Kuhl, of Vienna, and Sandra S. Jones, of West Chester, Pa.; a goddaughter Elizabeth A. Bailey West, of Vienna; a sister Betty Lou Talbott, of Parkersburg; a brother William J. Cowan, of Richmond, Va.; and five grandchildren, Jared and Barbara Kuhl, of Vienna, and Megan, Kathryn and Christopher Jones, of West Chester.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jackson M. Cowan; and a daughter, Barbara L. Cowan.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 22 at 11 a.m. at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, the Rev. Paul Stadelman officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the WVU School of Medicine or the WVU athletic department or St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 11th and Market streets, Parkersburg, WV 26101.
