Charles was the son of Gilman & Susan (Smith) Emery. During the Civil War he enlisted in the 8th Vermont Inf. Co. D. and served until the end of the war. His brother Asa was in the same company. During the war he was captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana and was later released at City Point, Va. In 1864 he was badly injured building breastworks at Fishers Hill, Va. when he lost his footing and fell on his back, the heavy timber falling on him. The injuries debilatated him for the remainder of his life, and he was applying for a disability pension as early as 1870. In 1866 he married Martha Ann Bedell, who died in 1918. They had these children: Willis, Hattie Smith Goodwin Roy, Lucy James, Wesley, Ellen Lang, Charles, Claude & Martha Lang. He outlived Hattie (died 1919) and Claude (died 1918).
