Josette, the oldest child of Charles and Mary Kennet or Kinnette Juneau, was also called "Josettie," "Josephine" or "Josie" on different documents.
She was born in Topeka Sept. 30, 1872, and baptized at the Church of the Assumption, Topeka, on Oct. 13, 1872. Her sponsors were John Duffy and Josephine Juno (her great aunt).
Marriage records say she was married to Edward David Schwartz on June 25, 1888, by a minister, but they had the church blessing on their marriage at a later time.
She and her children and their descendants were on the Potawatomi Indian rolls because of their ancestor, Josette Vieux Juneau.
She and Edward had 14 children of which ten lived to maturity. Four of the infants were buried in Mt. Calvary. They were Eddie, Clarence, Virginia and Julia. The tombstone, a little lamb with all their names on it, is no longer there, on the Juneau lot.
Their children were:
Charles Schwartz
Mary Nelson
Gertrude Talty
Edward Schwartz
Elmer Schwartz
Willim Schwartz
Oscar Schwartz
Irene Wood
Elizabeth Reade
Clyde Schwartz
As a result of her Pottawatomi heritage, "Grannie Schwartz" used to get a check in the mail. When it arrived, she'd drop everything and go shopping. One of her relative's husband had her invest in a company which went bankrupt, and the checks ceased coming. Grannie had a radio and listened to all the soap operas while she did her work. She always had the table set with plates, and in the middle, salt, pepper, sugar and creamer. The silverware was in a bowl. This was all underneath a tablecloth that was removed at mealtime.
Josette and Ed lived in a two-story home on E. Fairchild, which is no longer there. They died 9 months apart in 1950.
