Uncle Lee was my favorite uncle; he could tell a story that would have you laughing until the tears ran down your face. If there was something around the house that needed repairing, Uncle Lee could fix it and if he couldn't, it couldn't be fixed. He lived in a little post-WWII tract home with his 2nd wife, her 4 children from her first marriage and their 3 children. He was the superintendent of maintenance for the Vandalia-Butler School District.

Uncle Lee didn't start out as one of the good guys. In his youth he could only be described as a hell raiser. On 11 Oct 1937, after an evening of drinking, he assaulted a Frederick County sheriff and beat the law officer into unconsciousness with his fists. He was arrested on 18 Oct and convicted on 28 Oct 1937 (his sister Mary's birthday). He was sentenced to 18 months in the House o Correction in Jessup, Maryland. He was declared a public nuisance.

During WWII Uncle Lee served in Europe and helped liberate concentration camps, an experience he would not discuss with anyone when he got home. His war experiences changed his life.

He had been married to Gladys Keyser Martin, an older widow, but they divorced. His second wife was also a widow, Mary Fowler Anders. Uncle Lee always said he didn't want children, but in addition to being the father of 3 children, he was the step-father (more like father) to his wife's children from her first marriage.

Uncle Lee, you are so loved and so missed by your niece.
