Co-Founder Of Family And Friends Of Murder Victims

Grace Aline Critchfield Bartlett passed away at home with her family on March 13, at 90 years of age. She was born March 6, 1931 to the late William Aaron Critchfield and Alice Esther Pierce Critchfield.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Curtis Lee Bartlett; daughter Janet Bartlett Newman; and seven siblings. Left to honor her memory are daughters Myra Gale (Charles) Monroe and Karen Bartlett Taylor. Seven grandchildren: Kevin Brown, Matthew (Ann) Brown, Kimberly (Chuck) Stevens, Robert (Michelle) Taylor, Melissa Taylor, Tracy (Eben) Bates, Nathan (Lindsay) Newman; two step-grandchildren: John Dooley and Jared (Jennifer) Dooley; and 11 great-grandchildren: Chance, Bailee and Gracie Brown; Kurtis and Luke Stevens; Andrew and Elijah Newman; Olivia and Eleanor Dooley; Sarah and Rachel Parsons; and several nieces and nephews.

On June 25, 1950, Grace married the love of her life, Curtis Bartlett, and they enjoyed 60 years together before his passing. She raised their three daughters while balancing her careers and service within her church.Born and raised in Apison, Tennessee, she attended Apison Elementary and graduated from Ooltewah High School in 1949 as Valedictorian. She was well liked and voted the superlatives of Most Popular and Most Likely to Succeed. There were, also, a number of scholarships and honors awarded to her. Grace and her classmates cherished their close relationships and held a reunion each year after their graduation.

As a teen her first job was in a drug store soda fountain and afterward she became one of the first employees of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee in Chattanooga. As a mother of young children she was president of the Apison Elementary PTA, where she also served as part-time school secretary. Grace enjoyed being a substitute teacher at Apison, Westview, and East Brainerd elementary schools, as well as Tyner Junior High.Later in life, she began full-time employment as a Secretary for Halls Lifetime Toys. She worked for Pruett Machine Company and retired from Industrial Plating Co., Inc. where she served as the office manager for many years.

Grace was a member of Apison Baptist Church and then later Silverdale Baptist Church where she served in many capacities of church leadership and teaching, including the “Joy Class.”As a result of the tragedy that struck the family in 1985, when her daughter, Janet Newman, was murdered, Grace co-founded a support group for Family and Friends of Murder Victims. She made it her mission to help others cope with their grief and the trauma of such senseless loss.

The family extends special thanks to caregivers Marie Denham, Cheryl Welch and Kindred Hospice, who blessed Grace with tender care.In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org or the Silverdale Baptist Academy Building Fund at 7236 Bonny Oaks Dr. Chattanooga, TN 37421.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Plowman Cemetery.
