Samuel M. Comer, former head of Paramount Pictures' art and interior decorating departments and winner of four Academy awards for his movie set decorating, died Friday. He was 81.

Mr. Comer, who retired about nine years ago after more than 40 years with Paramount, died after a brief illness at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla. After his retirement, he had moved from Hollywood and settled in Oceanside.

In a career that covered over 40 years he won four set decorating Oscars. They were for "Frenchmen's Creek" in 194[4], "Sunset Boulevard" and "Samson and Delilah", both in 1950, "The Rose Tattoo", in 1955. [He was also set director for the popular weekly show, "Bonanza".]

He leaves a nephew Fred G. Comer, of Rosarita Beach, in Baja California.
A spokesman for Oceanside Mortuary said there would be no funeral services.
