Irvin Peter Lisagor was born in Keystone, West Virginia, the fourth, and youngest, child of Russian immigrants Paris and Fanny (Simpkin) Lisagor. Peter's mother died while Peter was an infant (likely on 13 Jun 1916, in New York). After Fanny's death, his father married Jennie Lipman, in 1917. His father died in 1928, in West Virginia, and shortly thereafter, Jennie moved the family to Chicago, IL, where he spent the rest of his childhood. His step-mother died in 1955 and is buried HERE. After graduating from Chicago's Marshall High School, he attended college initially at Northwestern and then the University of Michigan, graduating in 1939 with a degree in political science. Peter played collegiate baseball while at Michigan.

After graduating from Michigan, Peter returned to Chicago and worked as a sports reporter for the Chicago Daily News, mainly covering the Chicago White Sox. He was a World War II veteran, serving as an editor for the Army's Stars and Stripes newspaper during the war. After the war, he returned to the Daily News and earned a reputation for his quality reporting. In 1950, he was assigned to the paper's Washington bureau and, in 1959, assumed the position of bureau chief.

While in Washington, he continued to earn respect, and awards, for his political reporting. He reported on virtually every important political event during his years in Washington. He accompanied Richard Nixon to China during his historic 1972 visit; he was in Dallas on the day Kennedy was assassinated. He continued his reporting until a couple days prior to his death, his last column being published the day after he died.
Peter died in Arlington, Virginia, from lung cancer.

He was survived by his siblings:
Jack Lisagor 1910 - 1989
Ben Lisagor 1911 - 1986
Ida L. Rubenstein 1913 - 1994
