Michael was the gun-writers' gun-writer. In his foreword to Michael's book "Shotguns and Shooting" the late author Gene Hill wrote this, in part, about him: "Under this polished surface lies a work as carefully and thoroughly done as any on shotguns I've ever read -- and with little modesty there are very few I haven't read. I'm often asked, 'If you owned just one gun what would it be?' And I admit to waffling on my answer. But if you asked me if I could own only one book on shotguns, this would certainly be it." High praise; high praise, indeed!

He received his undergraduate degree in English from Iowa Wesleyan College, and his masters in English from the University of Iowa. He subsequently taught literature at the collegiate level for a number of years, but then left the world of academia to become a freelance writer specializing in the topic of fine shotguns and shooting, both life-long loves. Eventually he became a contributing editor and shotgunning columnist for "Sporting Classics" magazine, the gun-review columnist for "Shooting Sportsman" magazine, the shooting editor for "Gun Dog" magazine, a contributing editor for "The Double Gun Journal," and a contributing writer for "Wildlife Art News."

Michael's books include: "Shotguns and Shooting," "More Shotguns and Shooting, " "Shotguns and Shooting Three," "A.H. Fox - The Finest Gun in the World," "Best Guns," "The Best Shotguns Ever Made in America," "The Dogmen," "Wild Things," "Travelers Tales - The Wanderings of a Bird Hunter and Sometime Fly Fisherman," "The Big-Bore Rifle," "Shotgun Technicana" (with David Trevallion), and he edited "Robert Ruark's Africa," a collection of that late author's magazine articles.

In his spare time (that written with tongue firmly in cheek, for I believe that he was a VERY busy fellow) Michael also taught shooting with Bryan Bilinski at the Fieldsport Wingshooting School in Traverse City, Michigan.
