George R. Granger, 95, of Oxford, passed away Friday, March 13, 2009, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
George was born in Dec. of 1913 in Fenton, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Lord Granger. He grew up in the Fenton area, where he attended the local school. In 1931, George moved to the Oxford-McDonough area, where he has made his home for the past 78 years. Over the years, he worked for the New York Central Rail Road, Norwich-Eaton Pharmaceuticals and the Borden Milk Factory. He had also operated a farm in the McDonough area for 14 years and owned and operated the Poke-Around Antique Shop in Oxford. For the past several years, he enjoyed cutting wood.
George was a familiar sight in many of the local restaurants where he enjoyed going to eat. He was also well known in the area be it from the farm, cutting wood or from the antique shop.
George is survived by his sister June Aiken of Rochester, his good friend Betty Rosenkrantz of Oxford, three grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife Mabel, his second wife Beatice, his son George Granger, Jr., his sisters Elizabeth “Betty” Wage and Catherine “Alma” Bradt and his brother Edward “Jerry” Granger.
Funeral services for George will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Hills will officiate. Friends may call from 3 p.m. until the time of the service at 5 on Tuesday at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
