The flag of Clifton T. Johnson was flown on the memorial flag pole at the All Wars Memorial from September 1, 1990 to October 6, 1990 in honor of World War I, United States Army corporal Clifford T. "Pop" Johnson as American Legion Post 44's Veteran of the Month.
Clifton Johnson entered the United States Army on August 1, 1918 and was assigned to Company D of the 546th Engineers. He was discharged July 1, 1919.
He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts on May 30, 1895 and was a graduate of New Bedford High School. He was last employed as the steward for the Waterbury Women's Club from which he retired after 25 years of service. He was a member of Tyler-Seward-Kubish Post 44 American Legion.
His wife, the former Daisy M. Wolcott of Torrington, whom he married on July 13, 1949 in Dutchess County, New York, survives him. Three daughters, Susan of Torrington, Connecticut, Julia of Bloomfield, Connecticut and Joan of Kansas, also survive him.
