Jeanne Gaye was born in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Cardozo High School. She attended American University, Temple Business School and later Watterson College in Louisiana. She married her high school sweetheart and had five children. Jeanne worked in the federal government for 15 years.

She moved to Los Angeles, California in 1971. In 1988 she became an ordained minister and in 1991 became a member of the United Church of Faith, Inc. She later became a member of its Board of Directors and served in that capacity for four years. She has a special interest in children and is an author of children's books and has been a member of the Buffalo Literary Guild for five years.

Her civic and volunteer activities include: Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the United Church of Faith, Inc.; Vice President and past Recording Secretary of the Mary B. Talbert Civic and Cultural Club; Member of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs, Inc.; past Recording Secretary of the Empire State Federation of Women's Clubs, Inc.; a 25 year member of the Eastern Stars and past Assistant Secretary of the Northeastern Federation of Women's and Youth Clubs, Inc. Jeanne is the sister of the late Marvin P. Gaye, Jr. and served as past Chairperson of the Board of Directors to the Marvin P. Gaye Memorial Foundation. Her latest endeavor is establishing I Am the Children, Inc. a foundation dedicated to children.
