In 1833, Mary Drew Alt had a serious attack of Typhoid Fever and Jacob nursed her for 12 weeks. He was said to have been a great nurse, often taking care of the sick people in the neighborhood, shaving and laying out the dead. His children observed him retiring to the orchard, where he prayed in secret for Mary's recovery. Just as she was recovering, he took sick with billious fever and died in 11 days.
