While doing volunteer work, she met a soldier, Howard B. Arthurs, who was originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He had been sent to the Nashville hospital by the U.S. Army to recover from serious wounds he received in battle in Europe during World War II.
After their marriage, Howard and Ruth settled in Nashville. In 1969 they moved to Dickson County and set up a farm. They were married for 33 years until her death in 1979.
They had one daughter, Rhonda, who now resides just outside of New Orleans, Louisiana.
