US Congressman. He was a United States Representative from the State of Missouri. He was born as Lyne Shackelford Metcalfe in Madisonville, Kentucky, on April 21, 1822. He was educated locally and attended the local common public schools. He then attended the prestigious Shurtleff College in Laton, Illinois, and the prestigious Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois. Following his education, he engaged in the mercantile business in Alton, Illinois, beginning in 1844. He then entered politics and served as a Member of the Board of Aldermen of Alton, Illinois. He also served as the Mayor of Alton, Illinois. During the American Civil War, he served as a Captain of Volunteers in the Quartermaster's Department in the Union Army. He was later promoted to the rank of Colonel. Following his military service, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1863. He became involved in manufacturing pursuits and also resumed his political career and served as a Member of the City Council in St. Louis, Missouri. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed the outgoing United States Representative William Henry Stone (1828-1901), on March 4, 1877. A Member of the Republican Party, he then served in Missouri's 3rd District (Forty-Fifth Congress), in the United States House of Representatives serving from March 4, 1877, to March 3, 1879. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to represent the Forty-Sixth Congress in 1878. After his term in the United States Congress expired he was succeeded in office by the incoming United States Representative Richard Graham Frost (1851-1900), on March 4, 1879. After leaving the United States Congress he resumed his business pursuits until his death. He passed away in Kirkwood, Missouri, on January 31, 1906, at the age of 83, and he was buried in Alton Cemetery in Alton, Illinois. He was married to Sarah Tennery Baker Metcalfe (1827-1908), in 1848, and together they had two children, Lyne and Grace.
