Deborah Elliot Cochrane
Vero Beach - On Saturday morning, March 20th, 2021, Deb Cochrane, loving mother of 5 children and 4 grandchildren passed away at the age of 97.
Debbie was born on June 8th,1923 in Buffalo, NY. At age 8, she moved to Wimbledon, England with her family where she lived until age 16. While in Wimbledon, Deb attended the Beaufort School, formally known as The Study. In 1939, the family returned to the US and settled in Akron, Ohio. She then attended Foxhollow School in Lenox, Massachusetts. During World War II, she volunteered with the Red Cross as a nurses aide. She always described this service as one of her most gratifying experiences.
In 1955, Deb and her husband George B Shepard moved to Hudson, Ohio. The marriage later ended in divorce. During her 20 years in Hudson, she was affiliated with Robin Hill Limited, an interior design firm of national renown, which in the late 1960's was asked to redecorate a bedroom in Blair House in Washington, D.C. Deb was responsible for the design work on the crewel embroidery curtain and bed hangings for this room.
In 1975, she moved to Vero Beach, Florida and found the love of her life, William H Cochrane, who later became the mayor of Vero Beach.
Deb loved her children, grandchildren, painting, poetry, horsemanship, embroidery, the theatre and her church choir. She had a wonderful sense of humor, she was quick witted, she had a kind and generous heart and was a dedicated mother and spouse with many close, loyal friends.
The family is especially grateful to Chiquita Smith Reed for her dedication and care for Deb during the last four years of her life.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Deborah Van Felter, who died at age 47.
Surviving children include: Nancy Havekotte, George B Shepard, Jr., Elizabeth Shepard, and Alexander (Sandy) Shepard
