Enlisted for 12 months' service on 7/22/1861 at Davis Barracks, VA., he was mustered into Company I, "Rappahannock Rifles" of Rappahannock County, VA., 49th Virginia Infantry, as a Private.
Transferred 12/1/1861 into Captain John S. Green's Company B, 6th Virginia.
Enlisted at Scuffleburg, Fauquier County, VA., on 12/1/1863 by William R. Smith and mustered into Company B, 43rd Battalion Virginia.Cavalry, as a Private.
POW 1/6/1864 at Front Royal, VA.; confined 1/8/1864 in Old Capitol Prison, Wash., D.C.; transferred 2/3/1864 to Point Lookout, MD.; Paroled there 2/24/1865 and sent to Aikens' Landing, VA. for exchange; admitted 2/26/1865 into C.S.A. Howard's Grove Hospital, Richmond, VA. due to chronic diarrhea; transferred 3/8/1865 to Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond; granted 30-day Medical Furlough 3/16/1865.

Mosby's Cavalry Regiment, formerly the 43rd Battalion, was organized in December, 1864. The battalion was formed in June, 1863, with five companies, later increased to eight. The unit served behind Federal lines in Northern Virginia and was the most effective command of its kind. The enemy forces were never safe and the area became known as "Mosby's Confederacy".
