Ralph Kraus passed away on Friday, November 4, 2005 surrounded by his loving family. Diagnosed with lung cancer in late September, Ralph faced it head on, making a last trip with his wife and son down to his beloved Arizona to see some of his RV family. Ralph lived his life to the fullest and enjoyed every minute of it.
Ralph was born in Alden, Kansas on December 2, 1929. His family moved to Ridgefield, Washington when he was young, and here he resided for 68 years. Ralph graduated from Ridgefield High School in 1948, then attended Clark College.
He was part of the US Army Signal Corps Division, then worked for a local telephone company where he earned his famous "Legs" climbing poles. Ralph retired from Alcoa, Vancouver Plant, in 1983 as the Design Supervisor in the Extrusion Department. He then owned and operated his charter fishing boat, "FRESHJACK" for ten years out of Ilwaco, Washington. Ralph was a member of the Ridgefield Lions and was Past District Governor of Multiple District 19. He received the Melvin Jones Award and lifetime membership while active in the club. He was a long-time member of the city council and served as the mayor of Ridgefield for ten years.
Ralph and his wife Janet were very active in the Holiday Rambler RV club where they served as Washington State managers, rally coordinators and wagon masters, leading caravans to Alaska. He loved to travel with his wife in their RV and eventually turned "full time" spending summers in Washington and Alaska and winters in Yuma, Arizona. He was always in the middle of fixing meals at campouts and rallies they attended. If you needed to find Ralph while he was in Ridgefield, you could always set your alarm and visit with him and the gang out at the Country Junction during their early morning coffee intake.
Ralph leaves his wife of 53 years, Janet; one son, Ralph A. and daughter-in-law Pam; daughter, Susan Horal and son-in-law Bob; grandson, JR Horal and future granddaughter-in-law Emily Adams; granddaughter, Jessi Horal and future grandson-in-law Sean Schulz; brother, Richard "Lefty" and sister-in-law Marilyn; brother-in-law George Coley and his wife Dorothy.
He also leaves his many friends in his RV family, Lions Club and the old gang at coffee. Ralph will be missed greatly by his family and many friends for the impact he had on their lives and the many great things he did throughout his life, including just being himself. A celebration of his Life was held at the Ridgefield Community United Methodist Church, 1410 S. Hillhurst Rd., Thursday, November 10, 2005.
