Greta Risley Casavant was born Margaret Percy Beery on July 14, 1866, in Wilmington, NC, the daughter of Stephen Wallace Beery and Virginia Constance Risley. Her father died when she was five years old. Her mother married Robert Avery. Greta adopted her mother's maiden name. On March 19, 1896, she married Louis F. Casavant. a well-known opera singer. The following notes are from her obituary in The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, February 2, 1923: Greta Risley Casavant "was one of the best-known mezzo soprano singers in this country and sang many leading roles in grand and comic opera. She was known on the stage as Greta Risley and received her musical education at the National Conservatory of Music. She was a member at various times of the Gustave Hinrichs Grand Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Metropolitan Opera company and the Henry W. Savage Grand Opera Company. In comic opera she sang with the King Dodo Company. She also sang in "The Wizard of the Nile" and Sousa's "American Beauty. . . ."
