The funeral of Mary Oram, a highly respected colored woman, aged 53 years, wife of Rev. R.B. Oram, who died on May 24 at her home in New Market after a long illness, took place on Friday, May 26, at Simpson's Chapel, of which church she was a faithful and consistent member.
After short services at the house, the "Sisters of Charity" headed the procession to the church, which was packed to the door with relatives and sympathizing people and quite a number of her white friends took seats in the gallery. Rev. G.H. Booze, the pastor, conducted the services. Rev. J. H. Balthis, at whose home nearly all the children were employed in turn when young, made interesting remarks, advising them to strive to emulate the many virtues and upright deportment of their departed mother. Rev. G.J. Hill spoke of them as a quiet orderly family consequently respected by all of the people. Rev. C.O. Carroll, of Frederick, made the closing address.
The deceased is survived by her husband, one daughter, and seven sons. The pallbearers were George Spriggs, James Bowie, Sandy Hays, Dennis Snell, C.W. Riggs, J.L. Thomas, aided by six members of a Masonic order of Frederick, who acted as a relief. R.B. Randle had charge of the funeral as undertaker.
