Freeman F. Mahaffey, 97, Ottawa, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007, at the Village Manor Nursing Home, Ottawa.

He was born Oct. 27, 1909, at Erie, to Joseph and Onie (Fulkerson) Mahaffey.

He grew up in Erie and later lived in Blevins, Ark.; San Diego; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Parsons; Bullhead City, Ariz.; Baffin Bay, Texas; Kingsville, Texas; and Osage City before moving to Ottawa in 2002.

He graduated Erie High School in 1930 and attended Pittsburg State University for one year.

He taught school for two years and was a linotype operator before joining the military. After serving, he worked as a linotype operator in San Diego and retired after 15 years with the Parsons Sun.

He served in the U.S. Army from October 1942 to October 1945 during World War II, attaining the rank of Private First Class. He received the Good Conduct Medal, European Campaign Medal, African Campaign Medal, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Kingsville, Texas; Memorial Post No. 5901, Ottawa; American Legion of Kingsville and Warren Black Post No. 60 of Ottawa; and he was a lifelong Methodist.

He married Martha Stecher Jan. 19, 1946, at San Diego. She preceded him in death Oct. 29, 1986.

He also was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Glenn Mahaffey, Ben Mahaffey and Bill Mahaffey; and two sisters, Pearl Mahaffey and Eva Stevens.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jo Ann and Jim Stigall, Ottawa; a granddaughter, Miki Rocker, and her husband, Darren; a grandson, Russell Stigall, Anchorage, Alaska; a great-granddaughter, Denali Stigall, Ottawa; a great-grandson, Jaron Rocker, Ottawa; two brothers-in-law, Cecil Cummings and Franklin Stecher; and nieces and nephews.
