Elon Huntington Hooker Marquand (Lonny) died unexpectedly on January 26, 2021 in Portland, Maine. His wife, Jean, was with him as he passed away peacefully in the cardiac ICU at the Maine Medical Center. He was 77 years old and had been living in Pownal, Maine with Jean, Tyra, his dachshund, and Well Done and Danica, their two horses.
Lonny was born in Manhattan on March 28, 1943. His mother, Adelaide Hooker Marquand, and his father, John Phillips Marquand, raised Lonny and his two siblings, Timothy and Sabina, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Greenwich, Connecticut, Kent's Island, Newbury, Massachusetts and Aspen, Colorado.
All three children eventually moved away from New England, and Lonny lived for many years in Wedderburn, Oregon. Frequently, he made visits back to the Boston area. He was interested in authentic American "classical" folk music and among other commitments underwrote the Black Mountain Music Festival during the year it was beamed via Mountain Stage into the Former Soviet Union from Asheville, North Carolina. Along with his interest in original folk music, he was also searching for a place to call "home". This quest led him to purchase and sell numerous residences until he finally returned to Cambridge. He then married Jean (MacMurtry) whom he had known for many years. They were married in the Dennis Union Church on Cape Cod and moved to East Orleans, also on Cape Cod. They wintered with their horses in Aiken, South Carolina. Ten years ago, they moved to their present home in Pownal, Maine. Lonny called the property "The Sanctuary".
Lonny attended Shady Hill School, Deerfield Academy and Marlborough College in addition to the Arlington School from which he received a diploma. During his early years he struggled with what was diagnosed as a bipolar illness. Both of his parents passed away when he was a teenager. Lonny will be fondly remembered for his kindness, humor, generosity and sense of fair play. He was a superb judge of character and had no passion for wealth or sympathy for those who aspired to material gain or social status. In addition to his wife, Jean, he leaves his sister, Sabina Marquand of Hilo, Hawaii, his brother, Timothy Marquand of New York City, extended Marquand, Welch, Hooker and Ferry family members and many close friends. Burial in the Dennis Village Cemetery will be private.
