Virginia Mary Rafferty, 91, of Jacksonville, died at her home Sunday, March 28, 2021,surrounded by her family. Mrs. Rafferty was born December 19, 1929 to the late, Russell and Genevieve Boyce in Schenectady, New York and was also preceded in death by her husband, Cleon Herbert Rafferty, Daughter, Debi Shepherd, Son, David Rafferty, brother Robert Boyce, sister Milly Wood, Eleanor Boyce and granddaughter, Katrina Rafferty.

Mrs. Rafferty was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who unconditionally loved her family and friends. She was an avid lover of nature and enjoyed watching all forms of wildlife around her home. Virginia adored animals, especially family dogs, cats and birds and particularly Winnie her Cockatiel. Above all was her love of God and her family. She appreciated everything the Marine Corps represented as she supported her late husband throughout his Marine Corps career. Virginia was a true American and patriot at heart. Ginny valued all kinds of holidays and celebrations where she displayed her appreciation of music and dancing. She warmly welcomed all into her home and treasured being visited. Virginia was a Red Cross volunteer, hostess at Horde's Restaurant and a census taker at different periods of her life. She worked in Private Duty Nursing/Care and was a nurse's aide prior to receiving her LPN license in pediatrics. After retiring, Virginia became a homemaker who loved gardening. She soon developed a new passion for researching her family ancestry. Ginny was a devout Roman Catholic growing up in New York and continued in her faith after moving to Jacksonville. She was a member of the Infant of Prague Catholic Church for many years. In her later years, she was eager for the Word of God whether it was of the Roman Catholic or Evangelical faith.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday March 31, 2021 at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday April 8, 2021 at New Bern National Cemetery in New Bern with Pastor Jamie Arnold officiating both services.

Survivors include her children, Kathy Rafferty, Bruce Rafferty (Cyndi), Tom Rafferty (Mary) and Kevin Rafferty (Joy); a sister, Kay Moss; fifteen grandchildren, Carrie, Ben, Jessica, Brandon, Jennifer, Kristen, Bryce, Atasha, Crystal, David, Mike, Erin, Ted, Tommy and Jeremy; thirty one great-grandchildren; Addilyn, Brayden, Brendan, Kellen, Teddy, Natalia, Gaven, Brooke, Brandi, Kourtney, Melany, Brayden C., Tanner, Cameron, Jason, Eddie, Kaitlyn, Tyler, Casey, Hadley, Bubba, Savannah R., Chloe, Cassie, Savannah Rose, Michael Jr., Julianna, Matthew, Kurtis, Kayden and Allayah.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 before the funeral service at Jones Funeral Home Chapel, Jacksonville.
