Sara was born in Macon, Georgia at the end of the Great Depression to Robert V. and Mamie D. Mathews Sr.

She grew up on Napier Avenue and attended Pearl Stephens Grammar School.

As a teenager Sara was baptized into Christ at the Central Church of Christ on High Street. In later life, she placed her church membership at the First Christian Church on Vineville Avenue. Throughout her life Sara was strong in her faith and was always ready to help others.

Sara attended A. L. Miller High School. Always a leader, she was President of the Student Council and President of the Future Teachers Club. She was a member of the Beta Honorary Society. She was an Honor Graduate of the Class of 1955.

On the day she graduated from high school, in May 1955, Sara began her career with the Insurance Company of North America, INA/CIGNA, in a clerical position. Thirty-five years later she retired as Office Director. During her career with INA/CIGNA she served as the companies' representative to the local Red Cross and the United Way. She also served as President of the Insurance Women of Macon and received the honor of being named the Insurance Woman of Macon. In addition to office and community activities she completed several insurance study courses and received several designations including the highly regarded Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter Designation, CPCU. Also, in the early days of her career she attended night classes at Mercer University.

On August 11, 1957 Sara and her first love, Floyd Berry, were married at the Central Church of Christ. They enjoyed thirty-four wonderful, happy years of life together until Floyd died following a long, courageous battle with cancer. They traveled extensively with the Atlanta Skylarks Club and especially enjoyed spending time at their condo on St. Simons Island.

Following Floyd's death Sara began a five year second career as After Care Director with Snow's Memorial Chapel. During this time she became a member of the Pilot Club of Macon and served as Club President.

In 2003 Sara began a new chapter in her life when she and longtime friend and attorney, Lawton Miller Jr., were married on Christmas Eve at Lovely Lane Chapel on St. Simons Island. They enjoyed almost fourteen years of love and happiness until Lawton's death in 2017 which resulted from a fall and brain injury. They too enjoyed traveling, several trips to Europe, and many happy days at St. Simons Island.

Sara was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Anne Loudell M. Cheek, her brother, Robert V. Mathews Jr., and her nephew, Bobby P. Mathews.

She leaves to carry on her proud Mathews family heritage her beloved niece, Ellen Cheek Jordan (Terry).

Sara Mathews Miller, a wonderful life well lived on this earth and eternal life awaiting her in Heaven. Glory be to God Almighty, his son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
