Air Chief Marshal, Royal Air Force. He and his wife, and the entire crew, of a British military passenger plane died when it crashed in the French Alps. He was enroute to Southeast Asia to take a new post there. He was the most senior RAF member killed in World War II. Ironically a board of enquiry faulted Sir Trafford for the crash as he insisted it take off in bad weather against the advice of the crew.
