Vernon was youngest of five children born to Lewis Henry and Martha Jane Stockdale Bell: Lotta E. 1875, Alma B. 1879, Walter Earl 1890, Infant, and Vernon Lewis 1899.

Vernon married Kathleen Evans 8 Jan 1944 in Polk County, Iowa. They later divorced.

Vernon Bell, 58, of Maxwell, died Tuesday morning at Porrtland, Ore. Death was from complications from a long illness. Mr. Bell had lived in and around Maxwell most of his life. He owned and operated Cozy Corner café and service station south of Maxwell. He and his wife went west two weeks ago to see if another climate would help his health. Funeral will be Saturday at 2 p. m. at the Christian Church with the Rev. Randall Sims in charge. The body is to arrive Friday morning by train at Perry."
