US Congressman. He graduated from Brown University in 1795, studied law, and established a law practice, first in New Gloucester, Maine, and later in Portland during the period when Maine was part of Massachusetts. After running unsuccessfully in 1806, in 1808 Whitman was the successful Federalist nominee for the US House of Representatives and served one term, 1809 to 1811. He did not run for reelection in 1810, and served as a member of the Massachusetts Executive Council from 1815 to 1816. In 1816 he was again elected to the US House and was reelected in 1818, serving from 1817 to 1821. In 1819 he was a delegate to the convention that prepared the constitution which led to Maine's statehood. Whitman ran successfully for reelection to the US House from Maine in 1820 and served from March, 1821 until he resigned in June, 1822. He served as Judge of the Maine Court of Common Pleas from 1822 to 1841, and Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Court from 1841 to 1848. After leaving the court Whitman practiced law until 1852, when he returned to his hometown of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, where he lived in retirement.
