U.S. Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He served as the 66th United States Attorney General from March 10, 1967 to January 20, 1969. He was the son of Supreme Court Associate Justice Tom C. Clark. He dropped out of high school at the age of 17 to enlist in the United States Marine Corps and saw action in western Europe in the final days of the Second World War. After his military service ended in 1946, he earned his B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin and then earned both his M.A. and Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago. He would work in private practice before joining the Kennedy Administration's Justice Department in 1961. Before rising to become Attorney General in 1967, he served as both Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division and Deputy Attorney General. He served as the Attorney General for nearly two years under President Lyndon Johnson and left that office when the new Nixon Administration took over in 1969. During his stay at the Justice Department, he played an important role in the advancement of civil rights. After leaving the Justice Department, he taught law at both Howard University and Brooklyn Law School. He also continued his private legal practice. For the rest of his life, he took a more activist course in various areas including United States military involvement in various parts of the world.
