Dr. Kathleen R. Rice

Dr. Kathleen R. Rice, 75, of Parsons, died at 9:05 p.m., Saturday, October 27, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Society in Parsons.

She was born July 24, 1932, in Floydada, Texas, to Isaac "Bob" and Myrtle (Henry) Roberts. She grew up in Marlow, Oklahoma, attending school through the 11th grade there. In Altus, Oklahoma, she graduated high school in 1950 and attended one year of junior college.

She and Richard F. Rice were married November 22, 1951, in Altus. Following marriage, she worked while her husband attended Oklahoma State University for three years. The next two years were spent in Floydada, Texas, before moving to Parsons in June of 1956. She received her Associate degree at Parsons Junior College before attending Pittsburg State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in English and Speech Journalism and a Master's degree in Speech and English Specialist and College Administration. At Kansas State University she earned her Doctorate degree in Adult and Occupational Education.

She worked at Labette County Junior College from 1965 – 1979 where she was part-time Dean of Adult Education and Vice President of the college. During her time at the college, she received many outstanding service awards. From 1980-1997 she was employed by Day and Zimmerman in the Personnel Department. In 1997, she returned to Labette Community College as an adjunct faculty where she taught speech until 2005.

She was a member of the Swing 'n Twirl Square Dance Club, the Parsons Quilter's Guild and enjoyed sewing at the Quilter's Bin in Altamont. She especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren's activities. Through the years, she and her family had toured 46 state capitols.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Rice, on September 20, 2004; and one son-in-law, Winston Taylor, on August 8, 2007.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Friday, November 2, 2007, at the Forbes Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, November 1, 2007, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the LCC Foundation, the Dr. Kathleen R. Rice-Robert Rice Memorial Book Scholarship Fund or the LCHS Vo-Ag Department. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
