Kay Dodson Kinkade. 84, of Abilene passed away on April 13th, 2021, in Hendricks Hospice in Abilene, Texas, surrounded by loved ones and dear friends.

Amemorial service will beheld on Saturday, April 24, 2021 10:00 AM at Wylie Baptist Church in Abilene with Pastor Mike Harkrider officiating.

Kay was born on February 21st, 1937, in Walters, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Juanita Glee (Oliver) and R.C. Purcell. At two weeks of age, Kay and her parents moved to Goldsmith, Texas, and later into Odessa, Texas.

Kay was an active and lively youngster, her parents' only child and the light of their lives. She was curious and a bit rambunctious at times, and got into a few scrapes, but nothing serious - like the time she stapled her hand on a dare; and the time she cut her own eyelashes because someone told her they'd grow back thicker and darker. (By the way, that turned out to be inaccurate information.) As a young woman, Kay married a military man, and they and their two children enjoyed a life of travel and adventure as they moved from base to base, exploring and experiencing other cultures.

Kay was never one to sit around idly, so with kids grown and out of the nest, she decided to go to Court Reporting school, thus kicking off a 20-plus-year career that she absolutely loved.

Kay also participated in animal rescue, and her fur-babies were precious to her. She was generous to those in need, both two-legged and four-legged, and beloved by her church family.

After the passing of her husband, Kay became involved in the reunion committee for Odessa High class of 1955. Lo and behold, she ran into her high school sweetheart, Leland Kinkade, and a romance was rekindled. They reasoned that at their age, it was foolhardy to waste time, so after a brief courtship, they married; and so began her final adventure - a little over ten years of marriage to the love of her life, who delightfully felt exactly the same about her.

Kay's health began to wane the last few years, and after making numerous trips to SW Health in Dallas, three biopsies, over thirty cultures, and more than seven referrals to other specialists, she came home to her doctor to find out what the problem was. Although she sometimes became frustrated when her body wouldn't let her do all the things she wanted, the sparkle that came from the depths of her soul and shone out through her beautiful eyes never dimmed one whit. Her activities were curtailed a bit, but she still exercised her adventurous spirit by becoming a board game champion. She showed no mercy, and usually won!

Not too long ago, Kay's health began to deteriorate rapidly, and alas she became aware that it was time to move on. She knew and accepted the inevitable, and was at peace. She was ready, though her loved ones were not.

In the very early morning hours of Tuesday, April 13, Kay closed her eyes for the last time and slipped quietly out of her tired, painful, weary body and into the waiting arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Of course, those who loved her miss her and are mourning their loss; and though we are tempted to dwell in the sadness, we mustn't stay in this dark place too long - Kay would never stand for that! In fact, if you get very still and quiet, you can almost hear her say, "Okay, guys, that's enough tears - let's think about happy things!"

Kay is survived by her husband, Leland Kinkade, daughter Cindy Dodson, son Matt Kinkade, numerous grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Kay will be remembered for her volunteer work at Abilene Christian Services, as well as her rescue of several animals.

Kay will be cremated and rest in an urn that will stay with her beloved husband, Leland. In lieu of flowers, Kay had requested that donations be made to Wylie Baptist Church.
