Per Greenup County Order Book D, p. 257:
"Ordered that it be certified to the Secretary of War and to all whom it may concern that it is proved to the satisfaction of this court that John Alexander, Greenup, Betsy, Peyton and Lewis Alexander are under 16 years of age and are the children and only heirs at law of John Alexander dec'd late a private soldier in the 17th Regiment of United States Infantry."
This order was entered on 30 July 1818 so John Alexander would have died before that, likely during the War of 1812.

Research of the 17th Regiment indicates it was organized 26 Jun 1812, consolidated 30 May 1814 with the 1st, 24th, 28th and 29th regiments of infantry to form the 3rd Regiment of Infantry, United States Army. A John Alexander is listed on the roll of the 17th under Capt. John Chunn and Col. John Miller, with a recorded enlistment date of 1 June 1818. It is extremely confusing but there is alot of documents available on these infantries and the various consolidations. John Alexander likely died between his June 1818 enlistment date and the date the court order was entered in Greenup indicating he was deceased (30 Jul 1818), indicating he died shortly after enlistment.
