Addison E. Canfield, 85, a Civil war veteran, past commander of C. D. Sanford post, Grand Army of the Republic, and for more than 50 years a well known resident of North Adams, died last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. G. Larsen of Orange with whom he had made his home tor the past few years.
Mr. Canfield was born in Canaan, N Y., 85 years ago last August. During the Civil war he served in a New York state regiment and later came to this city to make his home. He continued his residence in this city for more than 60 years and during the greater part of that time worked at his trade as a carpenter, retiring from active work some years ago.
He was an active member of C. D. Sanford post, Grand Army of the Republic, serving as commander of that organization, and was greatly Interested in its welfare. He was for many years a member of the local First Methodist Episcopal church and of the Carpenters and Joiners union, retaining his membership in the three organizations until his death.
On July 2 1910, Mr. and Mrs. Canfield, the former Louisa Carr, observed their 50th wedding anniversary. She died in 1917.
During his long residence In North Adams Mr. Canfield came to be known as a man of excellent character, loyal to his friends and highly esteemed by all with whom he came in contact. His death will be mourned by a host of friends.
He is survived by two daughters, and by three sons. He Is also survived by a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at his home In Orange Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, after which the body will be brought to this city. Grand Army funeral services will be held at Grand Army hall on Holden street, this city, Saturday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock. Burial will follow In Southview cemetery.
