Maria de la Ascencion Valenzuela y Rodriguez was born on 28 May 1808 in Los Angeles, Alta California to Joseph Maria Valenzuela and Maria de Jesus Rodriguez. She was baptized on the same day at Mission San Gabriel. She married Jose Claudio Alvitre about 1830 in Alta California. On 28 April 1861 in Old Mission (now Montebello), her husband murdered Ascencion by stabbing her seven times. He was pursued and lynched for the crime. Ascencion was buried on 29 April 1861 at Mission San Gabriel Cemetery.
