Born April 27, 1928 in Salamanca, she was the daughter of Ceylon F. and Thelma V. Baldwin France. On Oct. 7, 1948, at the Belfast First Baptist Church, she married Jack S. Atherton, who died March 28, 1986.
Norma had resided most of her life in the Belfast area and was a graduate of Belfast Central School class of 1947. She graduated from Nurse's Aid School at Cuba Hospital and for a short period of time was a nurse's aid at Cuba Hospital. For several years she was a home health care worker in Allegany County, and for many years was a nurse's aid worker at Houghton Nursing Home, retiring in 1985. Norma had been a foster mother for many years, caring for many children. She also wrote and published poetry and was an amateur artist.
She was a member of the Belfast United Methodist Church; a member of the Belfast PTA; had been a 4H leader in Belfast; a Girl Scout den mother; a past member of the Friendship Swingers; and a member of the Allegany County Bird Club. Norma was also a foster grandparent at Belfast Central School and Mrs. Claus at Breakfast with Santa.
Surviving are three sons, Bradley J. (Bonnie) Atherton of Belfast, Timothy S. (Denise) Atherton of Belfast and Scott S. (Ann Galvin) Atherton of Belfast; two daughters, Wende L. (Paul) Kenyon of Belfast and Patricia J. Atherton of Belfast; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Beverly K. (Larry) Moyer of Black Creek and Rhonda N. (John) Kozlowski of Belfast; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Leigh Atherton; and a brother, Ceylon M. (Bud) France.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Treusdell Funeral Home, Belfast, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 24, 2015). The Rev. Nancy Russell, pastor of the Belfast United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Belfast Rescue Squad, the Allegany County SPCA or Life Net.
