One of only two of the original grantees of Poultney by King George IV, in 1761, he didn't settle there until 1771. As a member of the Poultney militia under Capt Zebediah Dewey, husband of his second wife, Beulah Stearns Dewey, widow of John Jackson, he fought in the Battles of Ticonderoga, Hubbardton and Bennington, and no doubt marched with the militia in support of other encounters as well.
